SOPA Update: Business Software Alliance Thinks It Over

The BSA is the main proponent of the SOPA legislation which has come under criticism here and elsewhere. Having kicked a hornet’s nest of criticism, the BSA today stated that  the controversial bill “needs work” before it can be passed. BSA president and CEO Robert Holleyman in a blog post today. “It is intended to get at the worst of the worst offenders. As it now stands, however, it could sweep in more than just truly egregious actors.”

No kidding.

As argued here, the current bill privatizes copyright infringement with no incentive to protect legitimate (i.e. legally protected) uses of copyrighted material. It’s not a good idea in the slightest. In fact it is such a bad idea, that opposition to SOPA actually has Republicans and Democrats in Congress on the same side of the issue. Republican Representative Darrell Issa and Democratic Representative Nancy Pelosi came out against the bill. Rep. Issa said “I think it’s [SOPA] way too extreme, it infringes on too many areas that our leadership will know is simply too dangerous to do in its current form.”
